Joint BS/MS DegreeThe University of Iowa's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering is pleased to announce a new joint degree program. A student accepted into the joint BS/MS degree program will receive a BS degree in Engineering with a major in Electrical Engineering only when all of the requirements for the BS degree have been completed. The student will receive the MS degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering (with or without thesis) when all of the requirements for the chosen MS degree option have been completed. A maximum of nine (9) s.h. may be counted toward both the BS and MS degrees. Only graduate courses completed after admission to the joint degree program may be counted toward the master's degree. One additional course, constituting a maximum of three (3) additional semester hours of graduate credit, taken after admission to the joint degree program and prior to award of the BS degree, may be applied toward the MS degree requirements, provided that this course is not used to satisfy BS degree requirements. The student must have less than 15 s.h. of remaining undergraduate coursework and must be in the second or subsequent semester of their joint BS/MS program at the time that this course is taken. Eligibility CriteriaA student applying for entry into the joint BS/MS degree program offered by ECE must meet the following criteria:
Application ProcessA student applying for Departmental approval for participation in the joint BS/MS program must submit a letter of application that includes a statement of purpose to the ECE Department Chair during the semester prior to which entry to the joint program is sought. Under normal circumstances the letter of application would be submitted during the student's sixth semester, seeking entry into the joint BS/MS program beginning in the seventh semester. Departmental approval of entry into the BS/MS joint degree program will be based on the student's academic record, references, the availability of positions, and on the availability of project funding. Upon approval by the Department for participation in the joint BS/MS program, the student must then submit the appropriate completed sections of the Graduate College application, including references (one of which must be from the student's identified MS thesis advisor if the student is applying for the MS with thesis option) to the ECE Department and the Office of Graduate Admissions before the end of the semester prior to intended entry into the joint BS/MS program.
